Rapid Delivery of Energy Company’s Online GIS System

Back to Insights

In Brief

Guidon Energy, a large oil and gas company, required a GIS system to efficiently create and share maps, apps, and data among various user groups. Resource Data implemented the GIS system, geodatabase, and user interface in just seven days, enabling users to view and access data through custom map viewers.

Challenge

As a premier oil and gas company in the Midland Basin Area of Texas, Guidon Energy needed a system to share vital geographic information about their assets with multiple parties. Though they had an in-house GIS Analyst, they required assistance in establishing the enterprise GIS backbone and Esri’s ArcGIS Online for Organizations.

Guidon Energy targeted several key objectives with the implementation of ArcGIS Online. One was to administer user roles, security, and content settings, ensuring a secure and structured environment for all users. Second, they aimed to present a professional user interface and printed map to enhance the overall visual presentation. Lastly, they sought to configure custom web apps that were specifically tailored to meet the needs of individual user groups, allowing for a more personalized user experience.

Solution

Resource Data led and executed a seven-day ArcGIS Online and Server kickstart, setting up:

  • ArcGIS Server: To manage GIS web services and applications
  • SDE Geodatabase: For data storage and management
  • ArcGIS Online for organizations: To create and share maps, apps, analytics, and data

By the end of the kick-start, Guidon had a flexible GIS enterprise system with content and custom web map templates, enabling them to create and share apps with internal and external user groups, and to print maps using ArcGIS Online with layoutsto ArcGIS Desktop.

With Resource Data’s help, we achieved all our goals in an efficient and cost-effective way. Doing this work completely in-house would not only have taken much longer than seven days, but would have also pulled us away from other vital business activities. We look forward to working with Resource Data again on other projects.

Approach

Resource Data completed a seven-day kick-start to implement and configure ArcGIS Server and ArcGIS Online for Guidon Energy. This included setting up the enterprise GIS infrastructure, migrating data into ArcGIS Online for use with custom map viewers, and providing training and knowledge transfer.

Within seven days, our GIS experts:

  • Installed Geodatabase using ArcCatalog and ArcDesktop tools
  • Installed SQL Server 2016 and ArcGIS Server
  • Published services such as image, map, and print services
  • Set up ArcGIS Online for organizations, including a customized splash page and icons
  • Integrated map services from Texas Natural Resources Information System (TNRIS) and Texas Railroad Commission
  • Configured web map viewer templates with client-selected tools and tuned content

Within one week, Guidon had a professional enterprise GIS, enabling easy sharing of geographic content with multiple user groups while ensuring proper information access control.

How can an energy company stand up a useful enterprise GIS quickly when it already has an in-house GIS analyst but still lacks the backbone to share data across teams securely?

An energy company can do that by bringing in focused implementation support to establish the enterprise GIS foundation quickly while preserving the internal analyst’s ability to keep supporting business needs. Often, the issue is not a lack of GIS talent. It is that one internal analyst does not have enough time or bandwidth to build the full infrastructure, configure security, create user experiences, and keep up with day to day operational demands at the same time.

That is where a short, well scoped kickstart can be valuable. It gives the company a working system sooner without forcing internal staff to step away from other critical priorities for an extended period.

In Resource Data’s case study, Guidon Energy had an in-house GIS analyst but needed assistance establishing the enterprise GIS backbone and ArcGIS Online for Organizations. Resource Data completed a seven day kickstart that implemented the core system and user environment. This case study demonstrates that outside support can accelerate enterprise GIS readiness without replacing internal capability.

Why does a growing oil and gas company need more than static maps if multiple user groups rely on geographic information about assets?

A growing oil and gas company needs more than static maps because different user groups often need different ways to view, interact with, and share location based asset information. Static maps can be helpful for one time reference, but they are limited when teams need current data, tailored views, security controls, and the ability to access the right information without waiting for someone else to prepare it.

That matters in energy operations because asset information supports planning, coordination, field decisions, and communication across multiple audiences. A company that depends on geographic information needs a system that can serve those audiences without creating confusion or unnecessary manual work.

In Resource Data’s case study, Guidon Energy wanted a system that could create and share maps, apps, and data among various user groups efficiently. Resource Data delivered a flexible enterprise GIS with custom web map templates and viewers tailored to those groups. Resource Data’s example demonstrates that dynamic GIS access is much more useful than static map delivery when multiple stakeholders depend on the same asset data. The operational impact is easier sharing, better access control, and more practical day to day use of GIS information.

What does it take to launch an online GIS system quickly without sacrificing structure, security, and professional presentation?

It takes a tightly scoped implementation that focuses on the core pieces the organization needs: infrastructure, storage, access control, and user facing tools that are good enough to use immediately. Fast delivery only works when the project is designed around the essentials and not trying to solve every possible future use case in the first phase.

Security and presentation matter because an online GIS system is not only a technical platform. It is also a shared business environment. If users do not trust the access rules or if the interface feels unfinished, adoption tends to suffer. A fast launch still has to feel structured and intentional.

In Resource Data’s case study, Guidon Energy needed ArcGIS Online configured with proper user roles, security, and content settings. They also wanted a professional interface and print maps. Resource Data delivered ArcGIS Server, an SDE geodatabase, ArcGIS Online for Organizations, and customized viewer templates within seven days. In this case study, rapid launch and disciplined setup came together when priorities were clear. This work resulted in faster time to value, secure information sharing, and a professional GIS experience from the start.

How can a company make sure different internal and external user groups get the geographic tools they need without giving everyone the same generic GIS experience?

A company can do that by configuring custom map viewers and content templates that reflect the different needs of each audience while controlling who can access what. Not every group needs the same tools, layers, or interface. Some users may need a simplified viewer, others may need more analytical features, and some may only need access to specific datasets. A one size fits all setup usually creates either unnecessary complexity or insufficient functionality.

A tailored user experience also helps adoption because people can work in an environment that feels relevant to their role rather than overloaded with tools they do not need. That makes the GIS system more approachable and more useful across the business.

In Resource Data’s case study, one of Guidon Energy’s core objectives was to configure custom web apps tailored to individual user groups. Resource Data tuned content and configured web map viewer templates with client selected tools, which created a more personalized user experience while maintaining information access control. This case study demonstrates that role based GIS experiences improve usability and governance. Results included a better fit for each audience, stronger security, and more effective content sharing.

What longer term value does a fast GIS kickstart create for an energy company beyond just getting software up and running?

A fast GIS kickstart creates longer term value by giving the company a usable enterprise foundation it can build on instead of delaying everything until a larger future initiative. Once the system’s backbone, geodatabase, services, and user environment are in place, the company can start creating, sharing, and refining GIS content much more easily. That early momentum often matters as much as the technology itself.

It also preserves internal capacity. If the organization can get to a working platform quickly, staff can focus on using and evolving the system, not spending months stuck in basic setup work. That makes future GIS growth more practical and less disruptive to the business.

In Resource Data’s case study, the seven days kickstart gave Guidon Energy a professional enterprise GIS that included ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Online, an SDE geodatabase, published services, integrated external map services, and training with knowledge transfer. Guidon’s GIS Manager understood that doing the work fully in-house would have taken much longer and pulled staff away from other vital business activities. This example shows that a fast implementation can create lasting value when it establishes a solid base for ongoing GIS use.
